Snapshots
Overview
You can take one or more snapshots of a VM to capture the state of settings, disk and memory at specific times. A snapshot will consume storage on your vDC.
When you take a snapshot, other activities running on the VM could affect the snapshot process when you revert to that snapshot :
- From a storage point of view, it is better to take a Snapshot when you are not applying a heavy I/O load.
- From an operational point of view, it is preferable to take a Snapshot when none of the VM's applications are communicating with other VMs.
For example, it's a good idea to use snapshots before making a major update that could potentially have an impact on your applications.
Do not use a single snapshot for more than 72 hours. Snapshots should not be used as a short or long-term backup solution .
Prerequisites
- VM Access
- VMware Tools have to be installed and up to date on VMs.
- Have sufficient storage resources on your VDC.

Create Snapshot
During a Snapshop :
You can't create more than One Snapshot by VM, creating a new one will delete the existing one.

Visualise Snapshots
A tick in the Snapshot column will indicate whether or not a Snapshot is present. If a snapshot has been taken, you can seethe Date and the Hour. A snapshot will consume the size of your VM's disks. If you have decided to keep the RAM, the storage consumed will be equivalent to the size of the disks + the RAM. |
