NUP Dedicated Cluster
Introduction
The Standard service class is based on shared resources. Orange Business provides licenses in Cloud mode, which means pay as you use resources.
However, to meet the Customer's specific constraints (like using Customer's Licenses), Orange Business has offers that can privatize a group of physical servers on the shared platform.
Orange Business provides the required tools that allow customers to check the VM's use on this dedicated cluster, in order ensure rules and Customer's Licenses compliances.
Principle
First, the Customer orders physical servers for making a dedicated “vDC Provider ” that will host a vDC. After that, all the resources are included in the physical servers. Please note that several vDCs can be built on a single cluster.
The resource allocation mode is "Allocation Pool". This mode has several advantages:
- Limits are set on the vDC, These limits are aligned with the physical cluster capabilities. It allows more resources to the VMs, (as long as they are available in the vDC : “burst mode” ).
- The percentage of guaranteed resources and the vCPU frequency can be set on vDC creation, It allow the customer to manage the consolidation ratio.
Parameters that can be set on vDC creation:
- The CPU allocation percentage
- The RAM allocation percentage
- The vCPU frequencies in GHz
In addition, it is the number of VMs that the Customer will choose to create in the vDC which will determine the overbooking rate.
In addition, overbooking rate is defined by the number of VM created by the customer.
High availability
This is in order to maintain application availability if a blade is lost, dedicated cluster must be sized by customer considering that a blade can be down.
A defective blade will be replaced by Orange Business within 48 hours.
However, VM's must be able to operate in this short period with a missing blade on a cluster, and without a significant performance impact on the of hosted applications.
Capacity management
Capacity management is managed by customers. Orange Business will provide VMware indicators to the customer in order to monitor the cluster and VM overall performance.
The time limit for installing a blade by Orange Business is 1 month maximum from the Order. For any request to add more than 2 blades, the deadline is 3 months.
The duration for one blade installation is one month at most since the order. For two or more, duration is 3 months.
The first dedicated cluster installation requires a capacity analysis that must be done by the customer and validated by Orange Business.
Other resources like storage or network, are supplied according to Flexible Computing Advanced standard process and are billed according to the price list in force.
IMPORTANT: cluster size modification and its approbal is under customer responsibility.
Configuration example
36-core blades/512GB RAM and target overbooking rate of 1.5
Number of blades 36 cores and 512 GB of RAM | 3 | 4 | 5 |
vCPUs available | 108 | 144 | 180 |
vCPUs available if a blade is lost | 72 | 108 | 144 |
Overbooking rate | 1.5 | 1.5 | 1.5 |
Resource pool capacities | |||
vCPU (nominal) | 162 | 216 | 270 |
RAM (nominal) | 1536 | 2048 | 2560 |
vCPU (with loss of a blade) | 108 | 162 | 216 |
RAM (with loss of a blade) | 1024 | 1536 | 2048 |
Subscribe to a dedicated cluster
A cluster minimum size is two servers. Billing is done monthly according to the number of the reserved physical servers , and according to their characteristics (see price sheet).
Orange uses physical “blade” on servers, having the following characteristics:
Physical blades are used by Orange on their servers. These blades have the following specifications:
Features | |
CPU | Intel xeon |
CPU frequency | 2.3GHz |
Number of CPUs | 2 |
Number of cores/CPU | 18 |
Number of vCPUs / blade | 36 |
Ram | 512 GB |
vDC allocation type | Allocation Pool |
A blade added during the month is billed in proportion to the number of active days.
For each blade subscribed, the minimum commitment period is 6 months.
6 month commitment are required for each blade subscription.
Dedicated cluster subscribtion and blade addition is done from the Cloud Customer Area (Espace Client Cloud).
